The story

A place with a past

01The Mughal capital under Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan (1556–1658).
02Home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites — the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri — all within 40 km.
03Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal (1632–1653) as a mausoleum for his second wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth.
0420,000 artisans, 22 years, 32 million rupees (worth ~$1 billion today), 28 varieties of semi-precious stone inlay.
05Shah Jahan was later imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in Agra Fort with a view of the Taj across the Yamuna.
Culture & flavour

How it feels, how it tastes

The mood

Deeply Mughal-Islamic layered over Braj Hindu heritage.

Marble inlay craftsmen (Pachchikari) trace their lineage directly to the Taj's original artisans.

On the plate

Mughlai cuisine at its origin: Awadhi biryani, galouti kebabs, sheermal, petha (Agra's famous crystallised gourd sweet).

Best table: Esphahan at Amarvilas.

Trivia worth telling

01The Taj Mahal changes colour: pinkish at sunrise, milky white by day, golden at sunset, and silver-blue on a full-moon night.
02The four minarets are angled slightly outward — an earthquake safety design so they would fall away from the tomb.
03Only 40 people per 30 minutes are allowed inside the main mausoleum from 2024.
04Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar's capital for just 14 years (1571–1585) before being abandoned due to water shortage.
05Shah Jahan planned a black-marble mirror-image Taj across the Yamuna for himself; it was never built.
