01Ellora's Kailasa temple was cut downward out of one basalt hill — 200,000 tonnes of rock removed by hand over a century.
02Ajanta's 30 Buddhist caves, painted between 200 BCE and 480 CE and lost to jungle until a British hunting party stumbled on them in 1819.
