The story

A place with a past

01In the 19th century the Nagarathar (Chettiar) trading community grew rich on the Southeast Asian spice and jewellery trade and built 11,000 palatial mansions across 96 villages in rural Tamil Nadu. Around 600 remain.
02Chettinad cuisine is one of India's most complex — Marakkai, kola urundai, pepper chicken cooked with 20+ spices in wide bronze vessels.
