The story

A place with a past

01Upper Dharamshala (McLeod Ganj, 1,770m) has been the exile home of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government since 1960.
02Backed by the 4,500m Dhauladhar range, surrounded by deodar cedar and rhododendron forest.
03British hill station from 1849 (site of Lord Elgin's grave).
04Given to the Dalai Lama in 1960 by Jawaharlal Nehru, becoming the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and the largest Tibetan community outside China.
