01Gir's 1,412 sq km of dry teak forest holds the entire wild population of Asiatic lions — brought back from just 20 animals in 1913.
02The Nawabs of Junagadh banned lion hunting in the 1900s, an early conservation decision that saved the subspecies from extinction.
