The story

A place with a past

01The 16th-century capital of the Vijayanagara Empire — at its peak the second-largest medieval city on earth after Beijing, 500,000 people.
02Sacked by Deccan sultans in 1565 and abandoned.
03Today: UNESCO World Heritage site across 42 km² of granite boulder landscape.
04The Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1646) ruled most of South India from Hampi, controlling the diamond trade with Golconda and welcoming Portuguese and Persian traders.
05Persian ambassadors called it 'the greatest city in the world'.
