The story

A place with a past

01Founded 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as India's first planned city, laid out on a Vastu grid.
02Painted terracotta-pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales — a colour by royal decree ever since.
03Capital of Rajasthan, population 3.9 million.
04The Kachhwaha Rajputs ruled from Amber Fort (1037–1727) then moved to Jaipur.
05The city's astronomer-king built Jantar Mantar (1734), the largest stone astronomical observatory on earth (UNESCO).
06The current head of the royal family is Maharaja Padmanabh Singh, born 1998.
