The story

A place with a past

01A cold high-altitude desert (Leh 3,500m; passes up to 5,600m) between the Karakoram and Great Himalayas. Population 274,000.

02Historically the meeting point of the Silk Roads — Tibet, China, Kashmir, Central Asia.

03Buddhist kingdom from 950 AD, ruled by the Namgyal dynasty for 500+ years from Leh Palace.

04Monasteries at Thiksey, Hemis, Diskit and Lamayuru date from the 11th–17th centuries.

05Merged with India in 1947, became a Union Territory in 2019.
